Lake Erie Swimming and its member clubs
welcome adaptive swimmers. An “Adaptive Swimmer” refers to an athlete with:
·
Physical
impairments
o
Amputation of limb(s)
o
Loss of movement in a limb(s)
o
Spinal cord injury
o
Brain injury
o
Deafness or hearing loss
o
Cerebral palsy
o
Dwarfism
o
Blindness
or visual impairment
·
Cognitive disabilities
·
Other impairments as defined by the U.S. Paralympic
Committee
At meets, race distances, groupings, and competitive rules are adapted to meet an individual disabled athlete’s needs, and according to U.S. Paralympic rules. While participation is a reward itself, this is only the beginning… athletes train to achieve their personal goals, and compete with others for the opportunity to represent their clubs at national and international meets.
